What is spindle oil?

Spindle oil is an ultra-low-viscosity, high-purity lubricant — typically ISO VG 2 to VG 22 — made for plain and rolling-element bearings running at very high rotational speeds. At high dmN values (bearing bore × rpm), a thicker oil generates churning heat faster than it can be removed; spindle oil keeps the film thick enough to separate surfaces while staying thin enough to run cool.

Viscosity selection follows spindle speed: VG 2–5 for ultra-high-speed grinding and textile spindles, VG 10 for typical machine-tool spindle bearings, VG 22 where speeds are moderate and loads higher. Oxidation stability and cleanliness matter disproportionately — a spindle bearing has near-zero tolerance for varnish or particles — which is why spindle oils are refined and filtered to tighter standards than general-purpose lubricants.

Yes — low viscosity and low additive content make it ideal for oil-mist generators. Ensure the lubricator is sized for the oil's density.

What viscosity is spindle oil?

Is spindle oil the same as hydraulic oil?
